End of Season Approaching !!!!

As we near the end of the season we have to think of the following :-

Last game of the season - Do we want to plan anything before / after the last game in celebration of the 2008 season ?

End of season cricket race - this will take place when we play our last game of the season away at Boddington. Please see forum created to discuss who will be victorious and the new champion.

Presentation night - please let us have ideas for venue and best date. If there is not a good day please let Si know immediately so he can try to organise so we are all availabe to attend. It may be hard to please all but I am sure Si will try his best.

Please think about the above and give your ideas by e-mail to to Si.

Crownhill v Bodicote 'A' on Sat 24th May 2008

This was a game that swung a number of ways in the last 10 overs, but due to our great attitude and determination we ensured we came away with a very important win.

Having won the toss (three in a row so I think I should have kept the coin) I decided we would bat and try and put a total on the board. We managed to put a score of 148 for 7 on the board off our 40 overs and although about 30 short of my initial target it was a well built innings. Steve and Deepak both managed to avoid buying a jug by just falling short of 50 but their scores were the backbone of the innings. Steve's innings was all about concentration and allowed the others batsmen to play their shots in his 30+ overs at the crease. Deepak's innings was in contrast, with his innings lasting about 10 overs, accelerating the run rate when required, by blasting 5 fours and 2 sixes. With 57 runs scored in the last 10 overs a total of 148 was put on the board. Well done to Matt Cusworth who scored his first runs for the club and to Si who was the only Crownill batsman to hit the tree, which was only about 10 yards from the square. Although Si claims it was going for a six.

A target of 149 was set for Bodicote and due to Steve's lateness in getting on the ground it was up to me to bowl the first over of the innings. The last time I did that was about 6 years ago when I was a youthful 26. Stu joined me in opening the bowling, in the absense of Ashish from the team, and between the two of us we managed to keep the score down to just under 30 in the first 10 overs. The one thing we had failed to do was claim a wicket. Fortunately in the 13th over the breakthrough came and I managed to hold a return catch. Then a double change was made and this brought instant success with Ash Portlock claiming a wicket with his first ball and it was the important wicket of their opener who had progreesed quickly to 48. Now with Steve and Ash bowling in tandem wickets continued to fally and by the 29th over Bodicote were 91 for 8. Ash had claimed 4 wickets with his unusual bowling and Steve 3 wickets. A victory seemed very close but to the credit of Bodicote's 9th wicket partnership they battled well and after a couple of excellent overs for them the score had progressed to 137 for 8 with 3 overs remaining. 12 needed with two wickets remaining. At this stage I had returned to bowl and luckily for me I managed to claim the two wickets required in the 38th over to ensure victory was Crownhills by 10 runs.

This was a very good confidence building win and shows that when we get near to the end of the game and still have a chance to win we have the nerve to complete the victory.

Well done to all and congratulaions to Bhupi who got married on Saturday.

Crownhill v Willoughby 'A' on Sat 17th May 2008

This game has to go down as one that got away and should never have done. The bowlers, backed up well by good fielding, managed to keep Willoughby to a score of just 104 for 7, off 37 overs on a wicket that offered a bit to the bowlers, but at the same time if you batted sensibly and waited for the bad ball, an innings could be made. The wickets were shared with Ashish picking up three, assisted by Stu and myself who got a couple each. Ash Portlock was lucky to get 0 wickets !!!! John Howe took a fabulous catch in the deep to the amazement of himself.

As I said batting was possible if you played sensibly and were prepared to dig in deep. Unfortunately we failed to do this and with many bad shots played and some poor foot skills, we succumbed to a miserly 64 all out. On the batting side unfortunately there were no plus points in this game, and as a batting unit we need to show more concentration and determination when at the crease. Time spent in the middle will ensure confidence and I'm sure this will come soon.

To top it all, unfortunately Nik Torpey suffered a dislocation to the thumb on Saturday, whilst attempting a quick run. He had just scored his 1st run for the club and then he unluckyily slipped and fell awkwardly. We wish Nik a speedy return to the first team.

We now look forward to two games in three days. Firstly a 20 20 clash with MK Air. Important for us to go out and enjoy and hopefully put in a performance similar to that against Evenley a couple of years ago.

Then on Saturday we travel to Bodicote and hopefully we can go back to winning ways in the league.
